Support for Afghan Asylum Seekers and Migrants in the UK

At AAMU Community, our mission is to support refugees and  asylum seekers as they navigate the challenges of resettling in the United Kingdom. We are dedicated to helping individuals and families rebuild their lives after the hardships of war, providing essential support and guidance to foster their successful integration into British society.

Our comprehensive range of services includes housing support, legal and immigration advice, language programmes, and cultural orientation. These initiatives are specifically tailored to meet the unique needs of  refugees and asylum seekers, empowering them to adapt and thrive in their new surroundings. At the core of our work is a commitment to education, emotional well-being, and a sense of connection, all of which are vital in creating a brighter future for everyone we serve.

For many newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers, the unfamiliarity with UK laws, regulations, and safeguarding practices places them in a particularly vulnerable position. They face significant risks, including harm, abuse, and exploitation. In response, AAMU Community has developed a robust safeguarding policy and escalation procedure. This framework enables us to identify risks and raise awareness about the causes of harm to vulnerable children and adults. We actively promote the principle that every individual deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and the right to live safely.

We ensure that all vulnerable adults and children supported by AAMU Community receive the training, guidance, and advice necessary to protect themselves from exploitation and abuse. This includes preventive measures addressing various forms of harm, such as physical, sexual, psychological, financial, and neglectful behaviours. Our safeguarding measures are designed to uphold and enhance the personal and social development of those we serve.

All of our staff and volunteers adhere to a Code of Behaviour that underpins our safeguarding commitments. This ensures a consistent and professional approach to protecting the individuals who rely on our services. We take immense pride in delivering support that reflects the highest standards of care and respect.

Our services include both standard and urgent support provisions for asylum seekers and refugees. For example, during military evacuations, we mobilised the community to collect emergency donations, including clothing, food, toiletries, hygiene products, and children’s toys. These essential items were distributed directly to those most in need upon their arrival in the UK.

In our routine operations, we address the critical resettlement needs of newly arrived refugees and their families. This includes providing in-person appointments to discuss housing options, tenants’ rights, and obligations. We have also supported hundreds of individuals in navigating the UK education system, ensuring children and young people gain access to appropriate educational opportunities.

Additionally, we deliver financial management and budgeting workshops to vulnerable individuals, alongside IT skills training, which includes guidance on managing universal credit online and developing digital literacy. Health and well-being remain a priority within our organisation, and we assist families in understanding the UK healthcare system, registering with GPs, and accessing both primary and specialist medical care. We also provide linguistic support to facilitate communication during medical appointments.

Our women’s empowerment groups offer face-to-face and virtual sessions to women, helping them understand their rights and obligations. We also provide guidance on escalation procedures in cases of domestic violence or safeguarding concerns.

Through these multifaceted efforts, AAMU Community seeks to create a supportive and inclusive environment where refugees and asylum seekers can build a stable, hopeful future in the United Kingdom.

Our dedicated team works closely with asylum seekers throughout the entire resettlement journey, offering essential support in key areas:

Housing Assistance

We help secure safe and stable housing for Afghan families, ensuring that they have a place to call home as they begin their new life in the UK. Our team works closely with local authorities and housing providers to find suitable accommodations, offering families the peace of mind they need to settle in and focus on rebuilding their future.

Legal and Immigration Support

Our team provides guidance on asylum applications, legal rights, and access to public services. We work closely with legal experts to ensure that individuals receive the advice and support they need to secure their status and rights.

Language Support and Integration

Language barriers can make it difficult to settle into a new country, so we offer tailored language programs that focus on practical communication skills for everyday life. We also provide cultural orientation to help Afghan nationals understand their new community and navigate the British cultural landscape.

Employment and Education Guidance

We assist families in finding employment opportunities and offer educational support to help Afghan children and adults succeed in the UK education system.

Emotional and Psychological Support

Many of the individuals we work with have experienced significant trauma. Our support services include access to mental health resources and counseling to help them heal and regain a sense of hope for the future.

Community Building

We strive to create a welcoming, inclusive environment where Afghan nationals feel supported and empowered. Our programs help foster connections within the Afghan community in the UK and encourage active participation in local life.
